| Chasing a Sustainable Future
- "When we enter the rainforest we become acutely and personally aware of the exquisite intelligence of Nature, holding millions of species in dynamic, evolving equilibrium." John Seed, deep ecologist, eco-psychotherapist
Forests hold a particular resonance for humans. Perhaps this is why issues surrounding old growth forest preservation exert such a visceral response amongst activists and others concerned by ecological sustainability. Paper production elicits an especially strong reaction.
Increasingly, due to continuing pressure from activists and consumers, large companies are finding they must pursue ecologically sustainable options in order to remain competitive. Many companies are, in fact, placing pressure on suppliers. Further, organizations like Markets Initiative and Greenpeace encourage industrial scale paper consumers to buy ancient forest friendly products, thereby increasing demand for ecologically sustainable papers.
In 2000 no Canadian publishing house routinely committed to phasing out their use of materials from old growth and threatened forests. In addition to smaller firms like New Society Publishers and Raincoast Books, such companies include Random House Canada, Penguin Canada, and Douglas & McIntyre.
Large companies such as Kinko's are setting benchmarks. The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) states in a recent December 1, news release that it is one of the first companies in the US to implement an old-growth free policy.
Many smaller companies have exclusively focused on environmentally sustainable paper use since their inception and they are growing rapidly.
Ethical paper use has become a mainstream concern. The paper we choose to buy, the furniture we select, even the clothes we wear, reflect a growing awareness of personal responsibility and global trends towards a more sustainable future. |
