Wax On, Wax Off…

Monday, August 24th, 2009

There’s a little spot along West Broadway in Vancouver that I walk past on a regular basis and everytime I do, I have a little laugh. There’s this amazingly awesome super old wood sign that’s placed outside a Karate school. This sign is a riot and I hope they never update it, only because it’s so old that it’s new again!

Check it out:

And just incase you can’t seem to figure out what my headline for this post is all about:

Childhood Toys

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Okay so this is going to be a tiny bit embarrassing and very personal, but at the same time it’s kind of interesting. I’m hoping this will become interactive and someone else on the team will post a reply, or maybe even some readers will share some links?

Anyway, I was recently forced to sort through a bunch of my childhood items that were in storage at my parents place, now that they’re moving, it was time to downsize and get rid of a lot of toys I had been storing away.

But, this post is not about the toys I’ve given away, it’s about the one’s i’ve decided to keep, because they were a big part of my childhood and i’m still attached to them….even at the age of twenty-six….(I know, kinda lame, but i’ll probably never grow up).

Meet Pound Puppy, Pooh Bear and Glo Worm.

Now here’s where I ask you the question, what was your childhood toy or item? A bear? A blanket? G.I Joe?

I’ve had Pound Puppy since I was a toddler and he travelled around the world with me, I used to use him as a pillow for my little head. As for Pooh Bear, I think he was given to me at a very young age, he’s super old and very worn. And lastly the ever trendy Glo Worm was just cool to use as a night light every time I went to sleep.

And I think that about wraps it up for my super personal and a little bit embarrassing post of the year!

We’ve Got Snail Mail

A while ago Cowie and Fox recieved an eye catching postcard in the mail, it was passed around the office and after a quick read and a chuckle we decided that it was perfect to post up on our blog.

Ikea Catalog Circa 1965

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Ikea has just released it’s 2010 catalog and in honour of this joyous occasion I thought it would be great to share the few photos of a catalog from 1965 that I recently came across while browsing the online world. It’s funny, the layout and fonts still manage to give off that “Ikea” feeling.

I think the images really speak for themselves and honestly I wish they still made some of the pieces that are shown in these pages.

A visual explosion of beautiful, haunting and cool imagery best describes Marco Brambilla’s video version of Dante’s Divine Comedy—made with the help of Toronto based studio Crush.

2016 Olympic Candidates and Logos

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Two months from now the International Olympic Commitee will name the host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics. I came across the logos of all the candidates as well as the bronze finalists.

If the decision was based just on identity/logo design, which candidate would you choose?

chicago-madrid

Chicago, USA
Designed by VSA Partners, this is Chicago’s second logo for its 2016 bid. The first (which featured an olympic torch with flames resembling Chicago’s skyline) violated Olympic rules which prohibit the use of the Olympic symbol, motto, flag, flame, torch, or medal. With the slogan “Let friendship shine,” the new logo uses a six-pointed Chicago star representing a compass pointing out in all directions of the world.

Madrid, Spain
Designed by 26-year-old Argentine Joaquín Malle, the logo was one of 2,700 submissions in a contest chosen by a public vote. Named “Corle,” the logo features a hand in the Olympic colors—which intends to represent unity among different cultures, people, and nationalities—along with silhouette of an ‘M’. The city’s bid slogan is“Hola everyone.”

rio-tokyoRio de Janeiro, Brazil
Designed by Ana Soter and selected by a special jury, the logo uses a stylized Sugarloaf Mountain in the shape of a heart to represent Brazil’s passion and enthusiasm for sports. With the slogan, “Live your passion,” Rio’s logo also features an exclamation point replacing the ‘1’ in ‘20!6’ symbolizing the excitement of the games.

Tokyo, Japan
Using the slogan “Uniting our worlds,” the logo ties the five Olympic colors in the form of a traditional Japanese knot. The knot, known as ‘musubi,’ has long been utilized in Japan to signify blessings during times of celebration.Tokyo’s logo was created by acclaimed designerKenji Ekuan of GK Design Group (you’ll recogonize his work if you’ve ever eaten sushi).

Bronze Medalists
These bids made it close, but were eliminated from the race in June 2008: Doha, Qatar; Baku, Azerbaijan; and Prague, Czech Republic. Since we are judging by identities, I believe these eliminations were spot on:
